Oh Yes! Childhood never return, but the memories.
I, at the age of 10 years was ever impressed by any vehicles, mostly the bikes. The bike riders are like supermen for me. My deep desire was to grow up as possible as early when I can touch my feet to ground while seating on bike. My favorite game was to drive the cycle wheel rim with wood stick….sliding between the groove of rim. My happiness was just like riding a bike as if I am mature bike rider.
Whenever I comeback from school, my first priority was running out in the streets with the metal rim, of the bicycle, without changing the uniform and not having ’nastaa’ my mother had been ready on table for me. After running few meters! (It was equal to many kilometers
for my little feet).Whenever I had returned home, with the dirty clothes, tired and full of hunger, what I first got was some elaborate treatment from my mother with angry words and sometime beating as a for my sports, before having “Nastaa”.
Difference with other vehicles and my ‘WHEEL GADDI” was that there were no breaks and I actually never considered about it. The braking function was solely on the luck of mine and others. If wheel is running out of control (Mostly on descending slope), what I was doing was just stop and watch that, what happened with fear (little) and joy (more) & curiosity. Other street goers always watched and shouted with fear if wheel may be heading towards them. Mostly the wheel was stopped by any wall or vehicle. In case it collides with any vehicle…what happened after that you can’t imagine but only me & my parent knows. I was punished sometime if hazard was as major as it should not be.
Once as usual I was running my vehicle on backside ground of my house. Some marriage function was there and buffet dinner was going on. Suddenly my vehicle “WHEEL GADDI” has taken such acceleration that I was helpless to control it, which entered straight into the dining mob like an angry buffalo. All buffet participants running here and there with all mess up. I escaped from there and go to bed silently in my house as if nothing happened and as if I don’t know anything. Next day morning my dad wake me up“Good morning beta”
I was already waking up but pretending sleeping under the blanket and recalling last night disaster.
Dad pulled out my blanket: “Boy!Wakeup it is Time to go school and tell me; it was you last night with wheel?”
Ashamed I stood speechless.
Dad smiled: this “It’s over now but the wheel has gone. It is in the safe custody of police and never mentions to anybody or your friend otherwise you also will be in jail. Forget the wheel and keep your study ok .Someday you will be having your real bike when you will be 18+”.
That was the last night I saw my “WHEEL GADDI”……but today at 57, I have rides many bikes…..driven the cars and meet with several accidents too. But the pleasure of that bicycle wheel rim is special for me.
When I saw movie ‘MAKADI’ of Vishal Bhardwaj and the song “duniya ka paheeya ghumati hu”….with Munni running with “WHEEL GADDI”
Oh! Yes many years after when I was mature man with my family. I understood that there was no police matter but the wheel was hidden by my Dad. I tried to give it to my son but he denied, because………..
He already have battery-powered toy car!!!
